Abstract

Results are presented on mixing and melting in single-layered Cu/Mo and Pb/Fe and multilayered Pb/Fe/Pb, Al/Cu/Fe and Al/Pb/Fe systems exposed to high-power ion beams (HPIBs) of nanosecond duration. Irradiation has been performed using 70% C + and 30% H + ions with energies 0.2–0.5 MeV and energy flows of 1–2.2 J cm −2. It was demonstrated that metastable states were produced in near-surface layers after HPIB irradiation. New states unknown before in the literature have been revealed.
