Abstract

A new generation of high power high reliability electron beam accelerators is being used for a variety of industrial processes. A wide range of products at high throughput rates is processed at low unit costs. Currently 150 kW of electron beam is routinely available at 4.5 MeV with higher power now practical. Reliability is a key factor in the acceptance of these machines in the industrial sector. Highlighted are subsystem and component developments that have allowed improved built-in reliability to be achieved. Microprocessor control now provides the capability to coordinate all the operations of the irradiation facility including the accelerator, the material handling system, various auxiliary services as well as the personnel safety system.
