Abstract

TWO new synthetic analogs of hydrocortisone: 2-methylhydrocortisone (2-methyl F), and 2-methyl-9α-fluorohydrocortisone (2-methyl FF), have become available (1) and early reports have called attention to the high Na-retaining activity of 2-methyl FF (2-4). This steroid has been stated to be 49 times more active in this respect than DC A and 155 times more potent in inducing K excretion in acute assays on adrenalectomized dogs (2). Investigators employing rats as test objects observed that the Na-retaining activity of methylated FF is 90 times that of DCA (4). The present writers have found the FF compound to be the most potent mineralocorticoid known both for maintaining adrenalectomized dogs symptom- free and for its remarkable activity in reviving such animals from severe insufficiency in record time with restoration of normal activity, vigor and serum electrolyte pattern.
