Abstract

This paper assesses the association between high performance work systems (HPWS) and various indicators of performance in small, medium-sized and large firms. Using data from the 2004 British Workplace Employment Relations Survey, the analysis demonstrates that there is no HPWS-performance relationship in the medium-sized firm sector, in contrast to the positive relationship between HPWS and performance found in large firms and (to a lesser extent) in small firms.
