Abstract
The ion optics of high performance mass spectrometers of double focusing type are investigated. In order to estimate the characteristics of a mass spectrometer numerically, a performance factor, PF, and an aberration factor, AF, are introduced and defined, and ion optical systems with larger PF and AF are sought. Excellent focusing and very high performance are attained by mass spectrometers with the field arrangement quadrupole, quadrupole, octapole, homogeneous magnetic sector, quadrupole, cylindrical electric sector (QQOHQC). Several examples are shown.
