Abstract

We report efforts at ADA Technologies, Inc. to tackle the challenges conventional Li-ion electrolytes are facing using design-of-experiment (DOE) approach to systematically study the role of electrolyte components and their interactions in Li-ion cells operated at a wide range of temperatures and near 5V cell voltage. The role of room temperature ionic liquids (IL) as an electrolyte component on performance and safety was studied. Lithium salts with good stability characteristics, such as LiTFSI, LiBOB, LiBF4, were evaluated along with LiPF6 used in conventional electrolytes. The role of individual carbonate and ester solvents on performance was also studied.
