Abstract

The surgical management of medial compartment osteoarthritis in the varus knee includes total knee arthroplasty, unicondylar arthroplasty, and proximal tibial osteotomy. While some authors report favorable results from arthroplasty surgery in young patients, 1 others prefer to avoid traditional arthroplasty in young patients. Young adults with varus knees develop severe medial compartment arthritis early in life. The relationship between alignment and progression of osteoarthritis has been demonstrated within 18 months of clinical follow-up. 2 Varus alignment contributes to medial meniscus tears, poor results after medial meniscectomy, and medial compartment osteoarthritis.
