Abstract
A study is currently underway to develop a polyethylene based long duration balloon (LDB) material for NASA use. The material must have a high tensile modulus, at least 700 MPa, while maintaining a high toughness to withstand the rigors of high altitude flight for weeks or months. A polyethylene (PE) based system was chosen to keep the excellent low temperature properties of PE as well as the infrared OR) and ultraviolet (UV) characteristics, and low film density.
