Abstract

Ni-doped MnCoSi alloy was prepared by high-magnetic-field solidification with a slow cooling rate. At a 3 at% Ni substitution for Mn, the room-temperature critical field was decreased to 0.4 T and the tricritical temperature between first-order and second-order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic metamagnetic phase transformation was tuned to 280 K. As a result, we obtained oriented and dense Mn0.97Ni0.03CoSi alloy and observed anisotropic reversible magnetostrictive effects under the magnetic field of 3.1 T near room temperature.
