Abstract

The energy and voltage levels produced from wave energy converters are relatively low and must be stepped up considerably to enable DC grid integration, necessitating high voltage gain DC-DC boost converters. This paper presents a new form of boost converter to enable the grid connection of wave energy. A transformer-less DC-DC Switched Inductor Multilevel Boost Converter (SIMBC) is presented, the main advantages of which are the ability to achieve high voltage gain without the need for an excessive duty cycle, as well as low voltage stress on the switching device, and self-balanced voltage levels at the output. In addition, the proposed converter has only a single switch such as reducing the complexity of the control strategy. The proposed converter has been compared with the single inductor multilevel boost converter (MBC) and it realizes a higher voltage gain conversion ratio. In this work, a 3-level SIMBC prototype has been implemented and achieved 300 V to 3 kV conversion with an efficiency of 93.2% at a duty cycle of 56%.
