Abstract

A dual-band circularly polarized (CP) printed monopole antenna backed with a 3×3 artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) array is presented for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. The antenna is composed of a rectangular monopole and an asymmetric ground plane. By introducing the C-shaped ring, CP radiation could be achieved. To reduce the backward scattering wave towards the human body and achieve enhancements to gain and SAR, the monopole antenna is set above a conventional square loop geometry representing the Artificial Magnetic Conductor design. The proposed antenna operates at dual-band resonance frequencies at 3.5 GHz, for WiMAX wireless applications, and at 5.5 GHz for the ISM Band. It exhibits good gain and SAR at a separation of 15mm from the human body model. The simulated results demonstrate that the proposed AMC integrated antenna has an average gain of 5.6 dBi in lower band, 5.15 dBi in upper band, and front-to-back ratio of 10.83 dB and 9.34 dB, when placed on the phantom. The proposed design is suitable for WBAN applications.
