Abstract

A novel approach to the acoustical Freedericksz transition in the high-frequency regime is developed. The prominent role played by bulk viscosities is highlighted. Using experimental data, it is shown that α/α4 = 2.7 × 103, where the combination α ≡ ρ1 + ρ2 + ρ3 + α1 + α4 + α5 + α6 consists of shear and bulk viscosities of a nematic. The magnitude of this ratio is in agreement with what is found in fluids composed by molecules possessing several internal degrees of freedom.
