Abstract

Purpose: Usage of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) for bronchiolitis has become increasingly prevalent. However, the effectiveness of HFNC therapy remains controversial. Our goal was to characterize HFNC usage rates and patient outcomes for children hospitalized with bronchiolitis at our institution, and to inform quality improvement efforts to reduce potentially unnecessary HFNC usage. Design: Retrospective patient-level data was extracted from an automated Electronic Data Warehouse (EDW) linked to Epic, our electronic medical record, to determine rates of HFNC usage in bronchiolitis patients, with a smaller subset verified by manual chart review.
