Abstract

Abstract Design and performance of high field sextupole magnets, appropriate for the use in atomic beam sources of the Stern Gerlach type for the production of beams of spin polarized atoms, is described. With neodymium-iron-boron alloys as permanent magnetic material a usable sextupole field strength of 1.44 T has been obtained at the inner opening of a vacuum tight stainless steel containment vessel of 24.5 mm diameter.
