Abstract

A powder and field-aligned samples of the 3d-4f bimetallic polymeric chain [Dy(NO3)(DMSO)2Cu(opba)(DMSO)2, DMSO: Dimethyl-sulfoxide, opba: ortho-phenylenebis( oxalato)] built from alternating dysprosium(3+) and copper(2+) ions are magnetic investigated in detail. The magnetic alignment for the powder is successful indicated by the remarkable magnetic anisotropy at low temperature. The high-field magnetization of the powder sample was measured at the temperatures down to 1.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 52 T. The high-field magnetization of the powder sample is in reasonably accordance with theoretical predictions for a spin-1/2 chain of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins. The present study thus provides the first high-field investigation of a new type of Ising-Heisenberg spin alternating chain.
