Abstract

Flow cytometry (FCM) has applications in biodefense, clinical, and environmental analysis of microbial populations [1]. Currently, the widespread use of FCM is limited by the size and cost of multi-color instruments. This paper describes a two-color micro-integrated flow cytometer (MIFC) which is novel with respect to 1) the configuration of fiberoptics within a disposable microfluidic system, and 2) the implementation of diode lasers, LEDs, and low-cost PIN photodetectors in a total analysis system with high signal to noise ratio (S/N). The MIFC (Fig. 1) has been validated using biological samples, and can reduce the size and cost of FCM by two orders of magnitude for portable, hand-held applications.
