Abstract

The aim of the present study was to reveal the effect of the high-fat high cholesterol diet (HFHC) in pregnant rats. HFHC diet was fed to Wistar female rats 8 weeks before and after mating upto 20th day of gestation. The effect of the HFHC diet was studied by measuring body weight, fat depots, liver weight, lipid profile, fetal parameters and histopathology of liver and uterus. HFHC diet fed rats showed significant increase in the fat depots, serum and uterine tissue cholesterol level. Increased liver weight, macrovesicular fatty degeneration of liver and infiltration of inflammatory cells and cystic endometrial glands were noticed in the uterine histopathology of HFHC fed rats. However, there was no change in litter size and weight. In conclusion, feeding of a HFHC diet prior to and during pregnancy of Wistar rats led to significant change in the metabolic profile of rats, which was associated with increase in liver weight and fat depots. Further, histopathology of liver and uterus showed inflammatory changes.
