Abstract

Introduction: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) act by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, an enzyme that regulates production of prostanoids including the vasoconstrictor thromboxane and the vasodilator prostacyclin. However, their effect on the cardiovascular system remains controversial. Most studies on the cardiovascular risks of selective and non-selective NSAIDs have not adjusted for comorbidities such as diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. We used a swine model of chronic myocardial ischemia to determine whether a high-fat diet alters the cardiovascular effects of the non-selective NSAID naproxen.
