Abstract

The quench heater design proposed for the HDM is based upon the SSC quench heater baseline design. This design was chosen by comparing past quench heaters performance with the HDM specifications and requirements while factoring in manufacturing concerns. The performance of the quench heater is modeled by calculating the transient temperature in the quench heater and the superconducting coils as a function of time after the quench heaters are fired. This temperature is compared to the critical surface of the superconductor to determine the time for a normal transition. The quench heater design will be optimized to decrease the delay between quench heater firing and the occurrence of a normal transition while maintaining sufficient insulating capability. The final choice of the quench heater parameters has not yet been made.
