Abstract

The bremsstrahlung-induced yields of some ( γ, xn) reactions, 1 ≦ x ≦ 15, in gold have been measured in the energy region 75–900 MeV. The mean cross sections in the energy region 300–900 MeV were determined. The number of valence neutrons available in the (γ, n) reaction was estimated. The experimental cross sections of the more complex reactions are compared with cascade-evaporation calculations based upon the free-nucleon photo-pion cross sections. Fission competition must be taken into account to explain the experimental cross sections. The experimental result is consistent with the idea that fission is most probable at low excitation energy after the emission of several neutrons. Fission fragments were observed in a catcher foil experiment and the relative yields were determined. For two reactions the isomeric yield ratios were determined.
