Abstract

A three-dimensional patch antenna structure is presented that offers high efficiency and wide impedance bandwidth. The antenna can be mounted onto a thin circuit board. This avoids thick substrate or stacked patch scenarios conventionally used to increase impedance bandwidth of a patch antenna. Operating at frequencies around 34 GHz, the antenna offers a measured 15-dB bandwidth of more than 14%. The efficiency of the antenna, measured using an improved Wheeler cap method, is higher than 93%.
