Abstract

A novel approach to achieve a high output power and high efficiency amplifier was explored. It consists of four identical class E power amplifiers and a travelling-wave power divider/combiner (TWPD/C). The design and implementation of a 1-4-1 TWPD/C by using lumped LC π-networks was introduced. For the application around the upper VHF and the lower UHF bands, microstrip line is not suitable as the physical quarter wavelength is too long. Analytical method with finite Q L of the series tuned circuit was applied to the design of the class E power amplifier. A 450 MHz, 5 W output class E power amplifier was designed and constructed. The experimental results showed that it can provide a high collector efficiency, namely 89.4%. A higher output power and high efficiency amplifier with 14.96W output, 89.5% collector efficiency and operated at 450 MHz was then built. It is a combination of the class E power amplifiers and the TWPD/C.
