Abstract

AbstractA new concept LCD backlighting system using the highly scattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymer has twice the brightness of the conventional backlight and uniform illumination. Light scattering phenomenon of a spherical particle inside the HSOT polymer is calculated exactly by the Mie scattering theory. It was confirmed theoretically that the color illuminated from the HSOT backlight could be controlled by the specified scatterer. In this paper, we reported the latest HSOT backlighting system having high efficiency and high color uniformity by optimizing the light scattering phenomena inside the light pipe. Also, these techniques developing efficiency and color lead to enlarging the size of the backlighting system.
