Abstract

Study Objectives: Calcium channel blocker (CCB) toxicity is associated with marked hyperglycemia requiring high dose insulin therapy. It is likely that the toxic effects of CCBs are more complicated than simply inhibiting insulin release. CCB toxicity may include the inhibition of peripheral glucose uptake. The objective of this pilot study was to determine the molecular basis for verapamil's inhibitory effects on peripheral glucose uptake and insulin's ability to reverse those effects.
