Abstract

In large-scale clinical trials with a high-dose (0.1 mg.) estrogen-containing preparation, 37 unplanned pregnancies were reported, 26 of which were associated with admitted failure to follow directions. By single decrement life table analysis, this preparation was determined to be 99.5% effective at the end of the first 6 months. During any 6-month period over 36 months of continuous use, its effectiveness ranged from 99.3 to 100.0%. For a patient beginning the study, the probability was approximately 98% that she would not have an unplanned pregnancy during the ensuing 3 years.
