Abstract

The parameters influencing the design of a high data rate acoustic telemetry system are discussed. The advent of parametric acoustics now makes it possible to considerably limit the channel time dispersion and thereby permit the utilization of phase sensitive modulation techniques, generally employed for high data rate cable and satellite communications. Such techniques are discussed in conjunction with an approach to error-correction coding which is both reliable and relatively simple to implement. A system performance estimate is provided.
