Abstract

In this work, C-Mn-440 steel was joined using CMT brazing with CuAl8 filler. Results showed that wettability, fraction of intermetallic phases in bead and intermetallic layer at the interface of bead-steel contributed to the shear-tensile strength of the joints whereas fatigue strength was most influenced by the wetting ability (wetting length and wetting/toe angle) of filler due to higher stress accumulation at the root and toe. Joints brazed in pull mode exhibited higher shear-tensile and fatigue strength in comparison to 0° and push mode which can be attributed to improved wetting ability, thicker intermetallic layer and higher dispersive phase fraction.
