Abstract

A single transverse mode laser beam of high brightness (1.8×10 14 W cm −2 sr −1) has been obtained by using a Self Filtering Unstable Resonator (SFUR) scheme with a XeCl laser. In order to judge mode distribution of the radiation field, a Young's interferometer has been used in the determination of the spatial coherence. The effect of the laser gain coefficient and of the dimensions of the filtering aperture on the spatial coherence of the radiation field have been investigated. The operating conditions to obtain a single transverse mode from a short-pulse high-gain excimer laser with the SFUR cavity have been analyzed.
