Abstract

Vectorial four-wave mixing of low-power ultrashort laser pulses in a highly nonlinear fiber with a properly optimized dispersion profile is shown to enable an efficient generation of high-quality photon pairs with photon-pair count rates above 106 pairs/(s mW). A superbunching regime of photon-pair generation with the correlation coefficients g(2)(0) exceeding 1200 is demonstrated with pump powers p as low as 0.1 mW. Very low values of heralded-photon correlation coefficients, gc20<3⋅10−3, achieved in the low-p regime reveal a strong antibunching in the signal-photon channel, indicating that more than 99.7% of the signal counts correspond to truly single-photon states.
