Abstract

To investigate the physical mechanism of the energy cascade in wall-bounded turbulence, we conduct direct numerical simulations. We apply the Gaussian filter to the simulated physical quantities so that we can extract hierarchical structures for various scales. The comparison between the coarse-grained value of the second invariant of the velocity gradient tensor and that of the “internal energy”, which is defined in this study, shows that the energy for a certain scale is indeed possessed by vortices of the same scale.
