Abstract

We discuss in detail the properties of minimal N = 1 supergravity theories, such as the possibility of soft supersymmetry breaking in the form of F-type mass splittings in the effective low-energy theory. The dynamical generation of hierarchies among mass scales, which are not fixed at tree level, requires the existence of a light singlet. The conventional problems connected with light singlets do not exist. A standard model with M P as the only input mass scale is presented; its properties suggest an embedding into a GUT with natural hierarchies.
