Abstract

We generalize to the category of orbifolds (topological spaces locally modelled on Euclidean space modulo a finite group) some fundamental theorems in the study of 3-manifolds, including the fact that compact P 2-irreducible 3-manifolds with nonempty boundary have incompressible surfaces and can be decomposed into balls by repeated cutting along such surfaces.
