Abstract

In this paper, a hierarchical edge detection scheme based on the pyramid structure is studied. Results of the conventional edge detection schemes using the pyramid structure are observed to be sensitive to the edge information extracted at the upper level and they have difficulty in selecting the threshold value at each level. To preserve the spatial characteristics of edges pertinent to each level and to reduce the difficulty in the threshold selection at each level, we propose the bidirectional edge linking algorithm using the edge information of two consecutive levels and introduce an automatic threshold selection scheme at each level. Simulation results show that the proposed hierarchical edge detection scheme using the bidirectional information in edge pyramids gives better performance than the conventional ones.
