Abstract

A cascade H-bridge Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) can be directly connected to 10kV distribution power system to inject inductive/capacitive current for load compensation. However, the system has a large number of sub-modules and control strategies are quite complicated. In this paper, a novel hierarchical design and control method is proposed, which divides the system into two layers. One is the central controller system (CCS) responsible for upper-layer control including the total dc-voltage, current tracking and dc-voltage balancing control, etc. The other is the distributed control system (DCS) for H-bridge sub-modules. Moreover, a practical fault-tolerant strategy combined with the proposed DCS is proposed. Finally, the correctness and the feasibility of the hierarchical system are well validated by 10kV/1Mvar industrial prototype.
