Abstract

The article deals with the hydronymy of the Bessarabian North-Pontic area. Preliminarily, the multi-millenary history of the Black Sea is briefly presented. For the researched hydronymic categories, the analysis establishes the diachronic stratigraphy of the hydronyms, as well as the areas of territorial distribution. It also highlights the geomorphological and natural characteristics of the hydrographic objects, their names being examined from different perspectives: linguistic, historical, geographical, ethnocultural. There are references to the first years of documentary attestation of the hydrographic objects, the origin and evolutionary meanings of the hydronymic names are determined as well. The article records the importance of onomastics research for the knowledge of Romanian history, language and national culture.
