Abstract

Imagine that you had managed to crystallize all that we know about mental health to four key concepts. What would they be? That was the task that Lloyd Sederer set for himself with his Improving Mental Health: Four Secrets in Plain Sight. Sederer, the Chief Medical Officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health, America's largest state mental health system, has devoted himself throughout his career to educating professionals and the public alike with over 500 articles and 10 books. In this slim and eminently readable volume, Dr. Sederer combines historical anecdotes, patient stories, research findings, books, and movies to illustrate four straightforward principles that are central to our mental well-being. They “hide in plain sight” because busy and super-specialized mental health professionals so often lose the forest—through which they must guide their patients—for the trees.
