Abstract

The author contends that transactional analysis is supported by a natural spirituality but that this is, for the most part, hidden. Drawing on the relational neuroscience of Damasio and Schore as well as Winnicott’s concept of transitional phenomena, aspects of relational transactional analysis are analyzed along with the roles of physis, the Adult ego state, and Berne’s concept of the Moving Self. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra is held up as a mirror to these to help bring the underlying spiritual nature of TA into view. Clinical implications are briefly discussed, including transcending the purely intellectual approach and what it means to establish mastery in practice.
