In 1983, I was offered the opportunity to become Chairman and Solon E. Summerfield Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy at The University of Kansas (KU), Lawrence, KS. Prior to that time, I had been a faculty member in the Departments of Biochemistry and Medicinal Chemistry at KU for 12 years and my research interests were focused on the design and synthesis of enzyme inhibitors having potential medical applications in the treatment of viral and parasite infections and neurological diseases.
