Abstract
Even though spacious conditions are integral parts of the vast majority of studies in the fields of sociolinguistics and variationist linguistics, they are not always discussed as subject matters per se. The special issue In Stadt und Land – Perspektiven variations- und soziolinguistischer Forschung aims at uniting different approaches that construe spatial categories not as sheer preconditions for the assignment of linguistic features or for the drawing up of maps but as central parameters in the analyses. The contributions thus illustrate one of the current trends in sociolinguistic and variationist linguistic research to explicitly discuss, conceptualize and systematize spatial categories.

Summary
Dieser klassische Raumbegriff bildet den Kern der Untersuchungen im Bereich der Dialektologie, wobei die traditionellen-dialektologischen Ansätze mittlerweile vor allem durch die Weiterentwicklung der empirischen Methoden und eine Ausweitung der Perspektive auf andere Bereiche des Variationsraums adaptiert wurden. Studien zur methodischen und empirischen Erfassung von topografisch bedingtem Raum sind dabei aber keineswegs auf den dialektalen Bereich beschränkt, vielmehr werden immer wieder auch die Relationen zum Variationsraum insgesamt oder zur Dynamizität der Gesamtsprache betont: Helmut Spiekermann (Münster) beschäftigt sich in seinem Beitrag „Subjektive und objektive Daten in der Sprachwandelforschung. Dass das Wissen über die Variablität von Sprache bei den Proband*innen groß ist, wobei auch funktionale und soziale Aspekte eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Ebenfalls in den Bereich der Perzeptionslinguistik – jedoch aus historischer Perspektive – ist der Beitrag von Verena Sauer (Kiel) mit dem Titel „Meißen oder Wien? Im Rahmen der Framesemantik und durch die empirische Analyse von sechs Grammatiken wird das historische Konzept Hochdeutsch rekonstruiert, wodurch eine Annäherung an zeitgenössische Spracheinstellungen möglich wird
