Abstract

Abstract: This article tries to explain the foundational entrapment of the logic of modernism, which imprisons interpreters in only one truth. It elucidates a clash between foundationalism and hermeneutics, and offers an alternative to overcome it. This study concludes that foundational textualism (bayani), intuisionism (`irfani), and empericism (burhani) in the history of Islamic thought, claim their own truth. Contemporary chal- lenges presented by post-modernism have shocked social and cultural conventions, systems of belief, statism and foundationalism of thinking, cultures and outlooks, which have been sacralized by Moslem society for long time. In order to look for a way out from this crisis of Islamic thinking, which eventually affects its social praxis, multicultural interpretation should become an alternative for Moslems in promoting Islam as a uni- versal grace for the whole creation.

GAGAP PARADIGMATIK FONDASIONALISME

Kerancuan fondasionalisme (foundationalism) dalam sistem epistemologi pengetahuan menghantarkan kita pada kebutuhan akan horizon baru yang lebih kaya dan beragam. Fondasionalisme klasik telah dimulai dari René Descartes (1596-1650), yang meyakini bahwa jika ia dapat memahami apa pun secara jelas dan terang, maka ia dapat memandangnya sebagai sesuatu yang benar dan membangun pengetahuan atas dasar pemahaman tersebut. Pernyataan-pernyataan tentang pengalaman tidak sendirinya dianggap benar dalam arti dipahami, namun pernyataan-pernyataan itu dapat dipandang benar secara intuitif sebagai bagian dari pengamatan empirik. Fondasionalisme semacam ini serupa dengan kebenaran rasionalistik, karena pada akhirnya ketidaksepakatan dan kesalahan yang muncul terjadi dalam pengamatan empirik secara langsung. Kesulitan serupa juga menimpa intuisionisme, yang berkeyakinan bahwa kebenaran apa pun tidak dapat dengan sendirinya terbukti melainkan jika pengetahuan itu didasarkan pada intuisi. Jika fondasionalisme adalah suatu tesis bahwa kita dapat mengkonstruksi pengetahuan dengan kepastian mutlak berangkat dari ketiadaan, maka penolakan atas tesis ini dapat memberikan berbagai kemungkinan tesis alternatif: (1) pengetahuan selalu dapat didekonstruksikan, (2) tidak ada kepastian mutlak, dan (3) pengetahuan tidak dapat berawal dari ketiadaan
