Abstract

An examination of 604 bunches of Sudan grass ( Sorghum vulgare sudanensis ), taken from various types of fields and covering a period of four years, showed a maximum of 540 bugs ( Blissus leucopterus ) in a single clump, with an average of 21.1 live bugs per bunch. The counts also showed that Sudan grass, although not as suitable as the native bunch grass, serves as efficient hibernating quarters for the chinch bug. The tall uncut bunches, or bunches not pastured too closely, which had a dense growth of leaves at the base, furnished the most suitable overwintering quarters for the bugs.
