Abstract

Phenyl isothiocyanate fluorescein (FHBS) was synthesized and characterized. The recognition of FHBS for Hg^(2+) was studied using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy in ethanol-HEPES solution(volume ratio 1:1, pH=7.0). This probe exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg^(2+) than other ion metals and anions, and other metal ions and anions did not interfere with the detection of Hg^(2+). Addition of Hg^(2+) caused a visual color change from colorless to bright yellow and a fluorescence change from colorless to bright green, so FHBS can be developed as a colorimetric and fluorometric dual-model probes for mercury(II) ion. This system was also applied in bioimaging.
