Abstract

Heydrichia groeneri sp. nov., the second recorded species of the genus, is described from western Cape Province, South Africa, and southern Namibia. It is ascribed to the genus Heydrichia on the basis of a type of sporangial development in which the successive production of tetrasporangia results in multiple sporangial stalk cells. It differs from H. woelkerlingii by having a much thinner thallus, broader thallus cells, smaller tetrasporangia and tetrasporangial chambers, and fewer cells in the filaments surrounding the chamber walls. In addition, H. groeneri appears to have a somewhat wider distribution in southern Africa than H. woelkerlingii. A key to the South African species of Sporolithaceae is provided.
