Abstract

1. 1. Hexokinase type I is the predominant isoenzyme present in submandibular and parotid salivary glands of rats, although small amounts of hexokinase type II are present. 2. 2. In streptozotocin induced diabetic rats, the level of activity in the submandibular gland was observed to be diminished by 21% when compared to litter mate controls. A decrease in both hexokinase I and II accounted for the lowered activity. 3. 3. Less than 25% of the total hexokinase activity was associated with mitochondria in submandibular homogenates indicating that this tissue does not take maximum advantage of redistribution of hexokinase between soluble and mitochondrial phases as a mean of control.
