Abstract

A 3D heterogeneous TiO2/ZnO array was successfully synthesized on FTO substrate via hydrothermal process. The 3D TiO2/ZnO array exhibited enhanced light absorption, decreased interface transfer resistance, enlarged carriers’ density compared to TiO2 photoanode, and TiO2/ZnO array prepared with 10 mM Zn(NO3)2 exhibited the best performance. The maximum photocurrent density reached to ~ 1.1 mA/cm2 and further increased to ~ 2.0 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE with the modification of Au nanoparticles. This work demonstrated a promising method for preparing heterogeneous three-dimensional TiO2/ZnO nanorod array with excellent PEC performance for water splitting.
