Abstract

In this experimental study, we used 3D X-ray tomography with an X-ray microscope (7B2) at the Pohang Light Source to visualize heterogeneous porosity distribution (HPD) according to the gas diffusion layer (GDL) compression ratio in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The porosity of the through-plane direction in the carbon fiber type of the GDL is not a single uniform porosity; rather, the porosity has HPD, which is seriously affected by GDL compression. Visualization of HPD of the GDL is very important for understanding and validating the models to predict the effect of GDL compression in the PEMFC. The experimental results show that HPD is more intensified as the GDL compression ratio is increased.
