Abstract

While prior research on competence-destroying technological discontinuities has focused on differences between survivors and non-survivors, the focus here is on heterogeneity among survivors. Case study analyses of survivors of the discontinuity in the computer graphics chips industry in the mid 1990s identify two types: technological leaders and market followers.
