Abstract

To evaluate the performance of a quasi-optical SIS (Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor) mixer, frequency response and mixer noise temperature have been discussed comparatively. We have found that frequency response and noise temperature were closely related. The mixer whose peak of frequency response is almost at the design frequency, and ratio of frequency response to noise is higher, shows the lower receiver noise temperature at the design frequency. Our mixer is a 345-GHz quasi-optical SIS mixer and demonstrated a 3 dB-bandwidth region of 160 to 360 GHz, ratio of frequency response to noise of 31 at 330 GHz and double sideband mixer noise temperature of 104 K at 332 GHz.
