Abstract

An initial light-dependent stage in heterocyst formation in Anabaena cylindrica was observed. The length of the period of illumination, between 3 and 9 h, determined the frequency 0 mature heterocyst production. Sequential stages of commitment to both proheterocyst and heterocyst formation were shown by manipulation of the light period, ammonia, drugs and analogues. The modulated response of potential heterocyst-forming cells in a filament, requiring sustained periods of light and lack of nitrogen source, is described.
