Abstract

From the hydrodynamic interaction of two unequal spheres in a viscous fluid undergoing simple shear flow, a two-body collision analysis has been developed both with and without the presence of external forces. Capture cross sections and collision frequencies can be precisely defined and calculated numerically. In the presence of an electric field, an overall view of the results can be presented; homocoagulation is always favored over heterocoagulation. The influence of colloidal forces is illustrated by particular examples, but no systematic picture could be deduced; in most cases, homocoagulation is favored over heterocoagulation; under some particular conditions, however, the opposite can be true.
